Art Brings People Together

Quote of the Day:  "There is a real difference between someone who takes pictures and a photographer."  - Said a family member who was admiring the long hours that I pour into creating my art.

It's been a fun 4th of July weekend--spending time with family and friends (and my camera of course)!

But the truth is, this "photographerness" that gets noticed (yes I just made up that word) -- while it certainly involves a certain amount of minimum skill in order to be successful -- is largely a matter of determination.

The determination that I choose to pour into the art is in direct proportion to whether I feel that the art really "speaks" to me as a person, "us" as a family, or "all of us" as a people.

Determination that you'll go wherever you have to go -- like out onto a rock jetty in the dark -- to capture images like this:

Or sit on the beach during a thunderstorm:

Or on the rocks during a thunderstorm:

Or bring your expensive, professional camera into the pool to get "the shot":

Or to adjust the lighting modifiers many times in order to get the indoor crab portrait just right:

At the the end of the day, art brings people together.  I feel we already have enough things in this world tearing people apart.

When you're standing in front of a beautiful work of art, you can be standing next to a complete stranger - someone from a completely different walk of life, from another socioeconomic background, from another culture or origin - the art, properly done, can elicit powerful and consistent emotions regardless of the differences between the people.  And this, I find to be the most powerful thing of all.

Take this portrait for example:

This young gent's smile is so radiant that it fills the picture and warms your heart.  I don't care what language you speak, or where you grew up in the world - this art speaks with a common tongue, and it's message is clear.

Let me ask you this:  What art do you display at home?  How about in your place of business?  Does it bring people together?  Does it inspire emotion?  Does it make you laugh?  Cry?  Think, "wow, life is beautiful"?

If the answer isn't a resounding "yes" - we should talk.

Until next time...

v/r,  Ryan

Tony and Hannah's Wedding

Recently I had the pleasure of shooting a wedding for two beautiful clients who have an incredible faith and an inspiring love for one another. The wedding of Tony and Hannah was more than a simple joining of the families, it was a celebration of one family gaining a son, and another gaining a daughter.  It was a story of love and friendship that reflected the beautiful marriage that was intended for them.  I'm so happy that I could be a part of their special day!  Click a photo for a direct link to their album!

The Gallery Gets an Upgrade!

I recently ordered a number of various metal prints to upgrade my showings in the Solomons Gallery.  Here's one of them.  Printed at 300dpi onto white gloss coated aluminum, it mounts to the wall with 1" standoffs.  Contact me if you're interested in purchasing a print or five!

Blog Relocated

First off, this is the start of a new blog site.  It is replacing the previous blog located here. This was done to provide a more streamlined user experience in alignment with the rest of the site.

Secondly, my photos are now hosted in the Solomons Gallery for sale. Regardless of whether you go check them out (I hope you do!) – check out my portfolio and let me know if anything catches your eye. We can have them professionally printed at our photo lab and mailed to you. Metal, canvas, and paper are the options that I’m currently offering for my prints.
